“Black market cannabis” operates outside of the regulated and legal frameworks. While a necessary step to combat prohibition, these channels are now saturated with uneducated vendors trying to capitalize on the cannabis gold rush by hustling potentially unsafe products. You’ve likely seen a local smoke shop promoting marijuana alternatives, as you drive through town, or a dealer from your social media network promoting a Telegram group where they are selling pre-packaged marijuana candies and flowers. The unfortunate reality is that these operations are, often, shady and have no regard for the health or well-being of their customers. Many of the products these channels offer are copyright rip-offs, marketed with branding that is designed to entice teenagers and children (such as Sour Patch Kids, Fruity Pebbles, etc.) and have not been vetted or tested (often even by the sellers themselves). Other products, such as unregulated vape cartridges, have a track record of afflicting respiratory issues and hospitalizing teens across the nation. Black market product claims of the number of milligrams in each package are outrageous, use of synthetic chemicals make them potentially dangerous, and lack of lab testing or validation demonstrates a blatant disregard for their customers’ well-being.

“Big cannabis” is a term that describes large corporations, often backed by venture capital, that are doing their best to monopolize and profit from the cannabis market. Through mass production and distribution of, often terrible, low-quality, cheap-to-produce, and high-margin products, they encourage a cannabis industry that puts their bottom line before the well-being and needs of their customers. These corporations have millions in funding and actively prevent local businesses from having a shot in their local markets.. which is often executed successfully as local entities cannot compete with their distribution or marketing budgets. Big cannabis is known for peddling low quality and overpriced cannabis. For reference, the 4 limited medical/pharmaceutical cannabis dispensary licenses in Virginia were all claimed by out-of-state corporations that swooped in and bought the show.

While we understand we need to get profitable as soon as possible, to have a fighting chance against big cannabis invading and monopolizing recreational licensing here in Virginia, we are committed to aligning our customers with cannabis by promoting natural lifestyles and providing an approach to cannabis that puts the customers’ well-being first.
